USB controlled Standards

Any way to use a USB or network only controlled instrument as a reference/standard?  I see support in Met/Cal for IEE-488/GPIB and RS-232 cotrolled references/standards but nothing for USB or network connectivity.  From what I can tell the VISA command only works with the UUT.

I have been told that there is a GPIB <=> USBTMC interface that can be used.  Not sure who sells it.

Can you adress your standard using the VISA FSC at its alias? i.e VISA [@MYUSBSTANDARD]

I do it with a USB controlled frequency counter but using the PORT FSC and it works fine.

That will only work for items that are actually RS-232 protocol handled over USB connection, rather than true USBTMC compliant devices.

The devices you're talking about, like some Fluke handhelds, create a virtual COM port on the PC when they are connected to the PC. USBTMC devices do not behave in this way, and must be communicated with via the VISA construct, preventing them from being used directly as a reference in MET/CAL.

You can use the VISA statement to only control UUT's with GPIB, RS-232, USB and LAN according to the help.  It sure would be nice if it could control standards too.  The unit I want to use is a true USBTMC device and doesn't have that virtual COM port option.

Michael - Are there any updates coming to Met/Cal that will allow the VISA statement to control standards?  I saw the link for the Tektronix USB adapter, thanks.  From what I read it's for Tektronix o'scopes that don't have GPIB already and you can assign a GPIB address through the o'scope.  I have an Agilent piece that I want to use.  Will it still work?

Met/Cal should have the option of using USB and LAN to contol standards instead having to purchase more equipment IMO since it (MET/CAL) is NOT cheap to begin with.

Is there a specific behavior in Met/Cal that you are looking to achieve? In terms of just control, I wouldn't see why you couldn't communicate with your standard as though it were a UUT.

Hi Dennis,

I think I might have answered your support request the other day on this topic? If not, please send an email to softwaresupport@flukecal.com and I'll add your request for this feature to the open request for it.

I can't provide any information on future plans for added features other than we do have an open request for this functionality to be added, so we are aware of the desire to have it.

From what I can tell with that Tektronix device, it should work with items other than oscilloscopes, but I haven't used it personally, so I could be mistaken.

Yes you were but decided to throw the question out there in case there was another option available.  I replied to your  e-mail requesting USB and LAN support for standards.
