3458A Syntax Error

When I hooked it up through the GPIB interface it gives a 103 Error " SYNTAX -- * Expected command header." I cannot find anything online to fix or reset the meter. Normally when I hook them up the NI measurement & Automation Explorer software gives its model and SN. simple handshake. Now all I get is

Name "blank"

Model Instrument1

Status Present

Primary Address 22

Visa Resource Name GPIB0::22::INSTR

The instrument did not respond to the *IDN? command. Refer to the instrument's programming manual to determine if this command is supported.

The tool we install these on is also not seeing the meter. the addresses are correct.

Hi Billy,

The error message is correct in that the 3458A will never respond to a *IDN? query. Since the meter was released before IEEE-488.2, it does not follow the standard command structure.

The identification query for the 3458A is just ID? so give that a try with a direct command to see if the PC is seeing the instrument.

I think its a tool error, we are going to do some more local trouble shooting. Thanks!

To fix this problem you need to Connect HP 3458 A to Fluke Calibrator 5520A then Fluke Calibrator connect to IEE-488.2 to PC.

John P, any further instructions? IT would be nice to know what to do should I see this problem again.

HP 3458 A uses the old query standard command , and Fluke Automation software uses the new query standard command 488..2 over NI GPIB connection cable so HP 3458 A is unable to work on this system. To make it works, Using GPIB IEEE cable connect HP 3458A to Fluke 5520A then using NI GPIB USB Cable connect Fluke 5520A to PC. Beside installing Fluke MET/TEAM software, Install NI package, Install 3458A software Driver (option). It works for me. I got the same the problem.

Open MET/CAL RunTime-> configure-> add HP3458A-> add DMM below HP3458A. (This configure is separated from another)

Fluke MET/CAL software does not use the same method as NI-MAX software to communicate with the 3458A, it communicates with the 3458A using the native command language without error. You can connect the 3458A directly to the PC, passing through the calibrator is not required. No external 3458A drivers are needed. The NI 488.2 drivers are needed to support NI GPIB controllers.

Fluke MET/CAL need NI-MAX software to communicates with Calibrator Fluke 5520A; not 3458A over NI GPIB USB connection.
